As she prepared to leave Philadelphia for her job in East Falls in August 1863, Emilie became very anxious about leaving her brothers and sisters’-in-law, in particular as EJ and Alfred had just been drafted and because Alfred’s wife Mary was ill. Emilie wrote many letters over the summer to try to keep on top of the affairs of family and friends.
