Annotation 1
Alfred mustered out of the U.S. Navy on December 31, 1864 after a year of service aboard the USS Mount Vernon. Emilie began noting her brother’s illness on November 10th. Alfred died on December 20 and was buried on December 22, 1865. Emilie mentions her nephew on several occasions in her 1864 diary, in the months after Frank was first admitted to the Quaker orphanage, but she does not mention Alfred’s nine-year old son here. “The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System,” http://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-sailors-detail.htm?sailors_id=Dav0008.
