According to his death certificate, James H. Wilson died on July 9, 1865 of acute dysentery, “a disease attended with fever, inflammation, and ulceration of the large intestine and characterized by gripping pains, constant desire to evacuate bowels and the discharge of mucus and blood.”  Webster’s New International Dictionary, Reference History Edition, Springfield, MA: G&C Merriam Company, 1910.
